Another model that I bought because of the rules this week, with Lord Solar Leontus; slightly modified to make him a lot less shiny and much more in keeping with what I think some nutter on a horse staring down a chaos knight might look like.
Whilst I do like this model, I always end up feeling a bit “eh” when I look at this one. I think part of that is that painting it was an absolute slog and it is a model that I got about halfway through before putting it away and forgetting about it for like 6 months before getting it back out and realising that I needed to finish it. This was also the model for me that taught me that maybe painting in sub-assemblies isn’t that bad; what with his cape and the tight angles where he meets with the hose.
All that being said though, I am pretty happy with what I did here, and it does look impressive on the table surrounded by little guardsmen ready to fuel the meatgrinder for another round. In game he’s still pretty strong; especially with the new grotmas detachment that gives all officers an extra order (meaning that solar can dish out 3 per turn in addition to gaining a command point!). He doesn’t get much game time as I usually prefer to just run regular old Commissars or Command Squads, but when he does go out there he does a good job! I have plans to build him a little retinue of Rough Riders at some point, but I don’t really like the horses in 40K, so I have something a little different in mind – they’re sitting in the pile of shame but I am sure they’ll make an appearance at some point!
